In 2020, more than a dozen science news releases and scores of opinion articles were authored or co-authored and distributed for clients in Toronto, Montreal, and Hamilton, Canada; Stockholm, Bonn, New York, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur. Some warned of emerging problems, others celebrated breakthroughs; all included new insights and hopeful ways forward.
Dominant themes this year were biodiversity, COVID-19, climate, energy, wastewater, electronic waste, and DNA (in the oceans and in art). Articles based on the releases, published at thousands of online news sites around the world, generated a potential 29 billion impressions, with many more people reached via newspapers, radio and TV

Many of the ~200 science news releases written and distributed for 30 clients in the 2010s warned of emerging problems; many celebrated breakthroughs. All included new insights and hopeful ways forward.
Biodiversity, the marine environment, and human health were dominant themes. Others included electronic waste, DNA, agriculture, freshwater, green energy, and The Anthropocene.

Research will enable personalized diets tailored to genetic make up
New research designed to help consumers create customized diets based on their genetic make up will create ethical and legal challenges with serious implications for the scientific and medical communities, warns a new consultation paper by a panel of international experts.
The paper, “Nutrition and Genes: Science, Society and the Supermarket,” a joint project of the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) and the University of Guelph philosophy department, examines ethical questions surrounding the rapidly emerging field of nutritional genomics, also called nutrigenomics, the study of how nutrients and genes interact and how genetic variations can cause people to respond differently to food nutrients.
Research started in 2000 and is still in its infancy but scientists already predict it could bring about radical changes in how food is grown, processed and consumed. They believe it will not be long before the arrival of personalized diets tailored to genetic make up. A major target will be the baby boomers, reaching their 50s and 60s and trying to forestall the onset of age-related health problems such as heart disease, arthritis, menopausal hot flashes and bone-density loss.
But the paper’s authors warn against a headlong rush to embrace nutritional genomics before there has been a detailed examination of its moral and ethical implications, backed by national awareness campaigns and public consultations.

First list of priority technologies to avoid looming ‘genomics divide’ between rich and poor countries
Millions of people in developing countries die each year from diseases that could be prevented or treated cheaply and easily in future through the development and use of a handful of biotechnologies, according to a study released today.
New procedures that enable faster, more accurate and affordable diagnosis of infectious diseases and genetically engineered vaccines could increase the length and quality of life of more than a billion people currently untouched by the biotechnology health revolution, the study finds.
The study, conducted by researchers at the Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) hosted at the University of Toronto, identifies the 10 genomic and other biotechnologies with the greatest promise of improving global health within a decade, particularly in the world’s poorer countries.
“Current inequities in global health present major ethical challenges to the international community,” said JCB director Dr. Peter Singer, a co-author of the study and program leader of the Canadian Program on Genomics and Global Health. “Genomics is described as a powerful new wave of health related life sciences energized by the human genome project. This study ranks the most promising tools being created by harnessing this knowledge, offering unprecedented opportunities to address the growing health divide between rich and poor countries.”
Entitled Top 10 Biotechnologies for Improving Global Health, the study represents the collective opinion of 28 eminent international scientists and experts (list appended) in genome-related technology and global health issues.

Canada’s International Institute for Sustainable Development, in a departure from the position adopted by most organizations dealing in environmental issues, says liberalized trade need not threaten the environment but the World Trade Organization should adopt a six-point agenda to deal with the legitimate environmental concerns of many public critics and observers.
“The civil unrest in Seattle at the WTO’s Third Ministerial Conference is part of widespread frustration in many countries and in civil society at the WTO’s failure to come to grips with the environmental dimensions of trade liberalization,” said IISD President David Runnalls.
“That failure is turning important segments of society, particularly in industrialized countries, against the trading system, raising serious obstacles to further liberalization and posing questions that could stall or dim prospects for the so-called Millennium Round.”
Mr. Runnalls said developing countries often feel their concerns rank lower than those of developed countries, causing frustration and disillusionment with the multilateral trading system. Promoting equity within and among societies is essential to ensure that growth genuinely leads to development.
As the Seattle Ministerial continued amid tremendous controversy, IISD released a six-point program to help green the WTO: five things it should do—and one is should not.
IISD’s recommendations follow:
1. Establish a “Sustainable Development Agenda” for the WTO. Step one: WTO should create a group of independent experts to advise actions needed to achieve sustainable development in the multilateral trading system. An independent inspection panel should also be established to issue regular public report cards on progress toward this goal.
2. Focus on Sustainable Development in the South: The World Bank and WTO should collaborate on effective mechanisms of special and differential treatment, based on the clear lessons of five decades of development efforts.
Such mechanisms, embedded in future negotiated commitments, should recognize differences in institutional and economic development, industrial structure and geography, and the resulting need of imposing trade obligations in stages. They should also, where appropriate, involve inter-agency collaboration, and the participation of major private actors.
WTO must recognize responsibility for ensuring that trade-driven economic growth leads to sustainable development in all countries, and benefits poor people and the environment.
3. Create a Standing Conference on Trade and Environment. The Conference would gather key environmental actors with an interest in trade policy, review policy objectives and proposals, and formulate practical recommendations for the WTO and other policy-making bodies.
4. Prepare an Agreement on the Environment, setting out rules governing discrimination among products on the basis of their environmental characteristics, as well as rules to ensure that such measures do not constitute a hidden barrier to trade.
5. Improve transparency in the WTO’s work, developing simple criteria and guidelines for openness in development of national trade policy and positions.
6. Do NOT Include Investment in the WTO. The international community should negotiate rules governing international investment outside the WTO.
